Over the years, many weight-loss diets, tips, and ideas developed to assist people with losing extra kilos. Weight loss aligns with people’s needs to look good and feel confident. Sometimes the development of weight loss methods became a fashion requirement without taking into account a healthy balanced meal. The drastic need to lose weight sometimes changed into unhealthy or diet extreme practices. These practices impacted our bodies negatively and people became sicker. Some events resulted in organ failure, fatigue, and troubling body systems.

The article below aims to list 30 unhealthy weight loss methods followed by individuals since the 20th century. The busier our lives became, the less likely we followed an active lifestyle. Because of it, we gain weight much quicker than before. To compensate for the difficulty in losing weight within a short time, we started with crash diets, taking tablets or undergoing surgery.

All these methods may work but only if maintained using a healthy approach. In addition, we commenced changing the diet make-up by focusing on certain food groups only. Our ancestral way of living that allowed for balanced meals and lots of exercises commenced disappearing. As a result, we started to look for a quick fix. These quick fixes adopted extreme measures that created negative health effects.

At first, I aim to explain the meaning of unhealthy weight loss. Thereafter, I focus on unhealthy weight loss methods that developed over the years. I conclude my article by presenting some recommendations before deciding on an unhealthy diet approach.  Let’s read what the next section says.

What is the meaning of unhealthy weight loss?

According to research, unhealthy weight loss can commence as early as the adolescent years. Youngsters create different practices of eating disorders taken throughout the adult years (11).  Unhealthy weight loss one can identify by observing the following key bodily changes people experience:

  • Loss of skin elasticity and dehydration.
  • Unhealthy loss of muscle which normally returns after following a normal diet again.
  • Increase of weight after dieting because your body aims to return to the previous shape or outlook.
  • Eating no-nutritional food comprises limited minerals that impact on your body’s ability to cope daily and stay healthy.
  • An individual showing signs of anorexia or unrealistic weight losses and displays signs of fatigue or constant dizziness.

30 Unhealthy Weight Loss Methods

Over the years, people commenced to develop different ideas of dieting from eating chocolates only, to drinking soup, meat or vegetable only related diets. It created diverse health problems on a short to long-term basis. Historically some food types presented a medicinal role to manage weight. Chocolates, for example, played a key function to allow for weight management during the historical years until uncontrollable use thereof (5). Some of these health problems related to physical sicknesses for example heart problems, constipation, nausea or constant vomiting. The section below lists 30 unhealthy weight loss methods I identified by researching various websites and articles available on the Internet (1).

1.  Tapeworm Pills

Using tapeworm pills to lose weight can present a significant, dangerous exercise and can cause your body to increase weight afterward. Drinking these tables can create symptoms of diarrhea, headaches, and vomiting not conducive to a healthy body.

2.  Diet based on Pureed Food

Some so-called diet specialists commenced marketing the use of pureed food as part of a healthy diet. The attempt allows an individual to eat a controlled portion of soft or baby like food available in a small container. Subsequently, it allows an individual to eat only a small portion of foods. The body becomes used to the use of processed contents and struggles to consume fruits, vegetables, and protein after ending the diet program.

3.  Lemon – Water Diet

Over many years, the use of water to lose weight commenced falling in the unhealthy weight loss category. Combining water with lemon juice, syrup, and cayenne pepper presented an option to ensure rapid weight loss. It sounds great, but one cannot live on water only and the body normally increases weight after ending the diet method.

4.  The Cabbage Diet

The age-old cabbage diet provided many opportunities to easily lose weight but with unhealthy outcomes. According to health practitioners, the use of cabbage can cause your body to slow your metabolism rate and create diverse nutrient challenges over a long-term period. Subsequently, your body experiences deficiencies in essential minerals and nutrients.

5.  Juice diet

The juice diet sounds wonderful but only drinking fluids prevent your body from consuming solid food. The diet only works for a short while and you lose a lot of water and muscle. Unfortunately, the diet prevents you from losing the fat you desperately want to get rid of. In addition, as soon as you eat your favorite vegetables and fruits again, you gain weight.

6.  Excluding Some Food Groups in Your Diet

Many times, we think excluding certain groups for example carbohydrates from our diet may cause us to lose weight. A diet should present a balanced meal. By excluding certain food types, it prevents us from receiving all the different minerals and vitamins we need to live healthily. A rising concern developed in the modern world with low to middle countries reverting to unhealthy snacking. The impacts of eating food containing limited nutrients present an impact on all ages of society (3). Unhealthy eating patterns can easily prevent proper growth in the event of young teenagers attempting to lose weight. The impacts become part of adult life as well.

7.  Drinking Laxative Teas or Detox

Making use of laxative teas to lose weight impacts your bowel function and creates a long-lasting effect. By constantly drinking these drinks, your system may prevent working as it should. You struggle to stay regular because of it. Using laxatives may allow you to lose lots of water but not necessarily fat.

8.  Diet Shakes

Increasingly, diet shakes became more popular with different brands taking part in a health promotion environment. Initially, diet or protein shakes formed part of a controlled diet plus regular exercise. Using diet shakes to lose weight may not work. These meal replacements carry significant traces of protein and, if not combined with regular exercise, you may increase your weight.

9.  Exercises Morning and Day

Taking part in increased exercise patterns can cause your body to experience intrinsic health issues. Apart from placing your body under pressure, you may not lose the weight you require. Mostly our hunger levels increase as we upper our physical activity levels. It results in us eating more and besides muscle build increase our weight levels as well.

10. Coconut and Almond Oil

During the last few years, the use of coconut and almond oil has become a healthy fashion trend. We believe that the use of the mentioned alternatives as a replacement for sunflower oil may cause rapid weight loss. Unfortunately, the results stipulated otherwise. A tablespoon of these oils still contain high-calorie levels and therefore one should prevent from overusing these products.

11.  Sugar-Free Products

Sugar-free products mean that the products exclude refined sugar as we know it but still contain artificial ingredients. Sugar-free products taste sweet because these products present traces of diverse sweeteners.

12.  Starvation

Starving your body to lose weight can cause diverse health problems. Losing weight by not eating results in your system losing the much-needed minerals and nutrients you need. One cannot live a healthy living without the maintenance of your energy levels by eating the correct food types.

13. Vinegar Drinks

Consuming vinegar with added tea causes individuals to lose weight by vomiting. Placing your body under stress to lose weight can cause long-term effects on your system (4). In the end, you may become medically ill and your body struggles to recover because of it.

14. Grapefruit Diet

The grapefruit diet started many years ago and convinced individuals to only consume the fruit group to lose weight. Although it lowers your calorie intake daily, it prevents your body from receiving a balanced nutrient-induced meal. Intake of any alternative foods after following a grapefruit diet may cause your body to drastically increase weight.

15.  Fasting

Individuals take part in fasting for various reasons, but the use of the practice changed into a weight loss fashion. Fasting over long time periods deprives your body of receiving the foods you need to stay focused. Fasting take on many forms, for example, abstain from eating any foods or excluding certain foods from your diet plan. Both I recommend can cause your body to lose the nutrients and minerals it needs.

16.  Smoking

Active smokers indicated that they experience lesser hunger pains than others. Although it seems an easy diet approach to take, the long-term effects offer the opposite. Smoking overall causes diverse diseases and bodily difficulties. Smoking results in many diseases and sicknesses related to cancer, heart problems, dependency on the drug itself, asthma and chronic lung diseases.

17.  Missing Important Meals

Missing your important mealtimes may cause your metabolism to slow down. Preventing a structured diet plan makes your body move into starvation mode. Your body stops from burning the additional calories and rather storing them as fat. Following a regular well-planned meal schedule becomes key to ensuring that you live healthily.

18.  Soup Diet

Following a soup diet offers a similar approach to starvation. Individuals who attempt to abstain from eating solid foods follow the soup diet approach. Especially soups that contain limited minerals or nutrients present no positive impact on a person’s body. Following the soup diet can decrease your metabolism level and allow you to increase weight when consuming your favorite foods again.

19.  Visiting Your Sauna

Many people thought by taking part in constant sauna experiences, you may rapidly lose weight. Therefore, individuals spent hours in the heated sauna hoping to get rid of the extra weight. The heated environment can cause your body to lose abnormal amounts of water and you can become dehydrated. The extreme measure of losing weight can cause you to feel dizzy afterward, and with a low-calorie diet, you may faint.

20.  Diet Tablets

Diet tablets can create diverse problems and issues when dieting. Many of these tablets include ingredients that make you feel dizzy, struggle to sleep and abnormally increase your metabolism levels. The challenge with weight loss problems revert to the fact that you rapidly lose weight, but afterward, you gain weight again. It causes diverse health issues by placing your body under pressure by quickly losing weight and gaining those kilos again within a short time period.  A significant concern commenced developing with young people at school level using drugs to lose weight. The medical industry requested schools to warn youngsters regarding the use of prescription drugs and following unhealthy weight loss practices (2).

21.  Exercising without eating

Exercising without eating allows for diverse health problems related to depriving your body of the energies you need. It places your body under tremendous pressure and may cause you to faint. During these circumstances, you become dehydrated or struggle with a low metabolism rate.

22.  Purging

Using purging to lose weight can create many medical problems by placing your body in shock. Purging normally forces your body to vomit after eating. The activity most definitely can create long-term effects on your health system. Females most likely tend to follow unhealthy dietary practices and feeling under pressure to lose weight. Significant research aims to identify if obese individuals feel that following drastic dietary measures become necessary and the attitudes presented by normal-size people (6). During many circumstances, individuals feel the only manner to lose weight reverts to unhealthy and sometimes extreme practices.

23.  Crash Diets

Individuals who use crash diets originated many years ago and changed into a fashion, especially in the 20th century. People who desperately wanted to lose weight for a school or work function, getting married or your first date commenced following the approach. These crash diets, unfortunately, led to many health problems related to dehydration, loss of electrolytes and slower metabolisms. Crash diets aimed to allow individuals to lose weight rapidly but without taking into consideration the long-term effects.

24.  Stomach Stapling

Using stomach stapling relates to the surgical development of a small pocket in your stomach. This area can only keep a small amount of food. Although it sounds incredible, it can cause complications during the operation and afterward. You also need to follow a strictly controlled diet to prevent your system from experiencing serious health issues.

25.  Liposuction

Many individuals aimed to use cosmetic surgery called liposuction to force their bodies to lose weight. The surgeon makes small incisions in your body and inserts a tube to get rid of different fat layers. The tube also destroys the fat layers by extracting the contents. Taking extreme measures to change your body can cause diverse long-term medical negative effects.

26.  Protein diet

Individuals who follow a protein diet limit your body to consume important ingredients, for example, vegetables or fruits. Weight loss happens by following a balanced lifestyle and includes all the food groups necessary to stay healthy.  Eating mostly protein relates to the fact that people feel fuller throughout the day. You still need carbohydrates to increase your energy levels daily.

27.  Fad Diets

Over the years, many fad diets have developed from being protein or vegetable-based. These diets presented some positive results for certain people and the opposite for others. Subsequently, people started to religiously follow these diets without thinking of the consequences. Fad diets allow individuals to quickly lose weight but the after maintenance thereof became a problem. Case studies showed that individuals who followed these diets increased their weight significantly after returning to a normal dietary approach (10).

28.  Gluten-Free Diet

Although we think that following a gluten-free diet may make us feel healthy, it presents the opposite. The gluten-free approach still requires extensive research to develop a clear understanding of the impacts it may carry. To make up for the taste of gluten-free products many times our bodies become exposed to alternative ingredients, for example, salt or sweeteners.

It causes us to increase our weight because of the alternate elements used in these products. Diverse debates exist regarding the use of gluten-free food, but research displayed a significant interest by people to follow the dietary approach. Individuals who follow a gluten-free diet may attempt to present a more serious tactic towards dieting. The matter still needs additional investigation to display the positive use of gluten-free diets (7).

29.  Fat-Free Dairy Approach

The fat-free dairy approach created a frenzy over the years, and people started to follow this diligently. As much as we think the fat-free approach may cause weight loss, it presents the opposite effects. Fat-free dairy contains added salts and sugars to compensate for the taste. The added salts and sugars create additional issues that your body needs to deal with. Subsequently, your body prevents losing weight because of exposure to more sodium and alternative sugar types.

30.  Drinking Ice Cold or Hot Water

Drinking ice cold or hot water to increase weight loss may not provide you with the results you need. The approach deprives your body of the necessary solid foods and can cause your metabolism to slow down. A body cannot create the energy it needs by drinking hot or cold water only.
