Diet or exercise what’s more important? These questions we face daily. It becomes difficult in our world to stay healthy by experiencing constant stress in our home or work lives. One can only manage a balanced lifestyle with help from diverse specialists in the field. Besides, a person requires self-motivation to achieve their health goals. 

Reaching a balance between a well-planned diet and exercising takes some planning effort from a person. As soon as you reach the level of a stabilized lifestyle, your body becomes content and significantly impacts your mental status. A content body offers a peaceful mind and allows for a coping mechanism during stressful circumstances. 

Many times, we feel that our dietary intake requires more focus than the development of an exercise program. Even after studying all the different recommendations, articles and literature available we continue to ask questions. Why do we need to exercise, why do we increase weight when overeating without taking part in physical activity? All these questions become entrenched in our minds. 

The article below aims to provide some insight into the reasons we need to find a balance between exercising and dieting. The article aims to provide answers regarding the reasons the health sector continues to motivate people to live healthily. 

A healthy lifestyle means taking part in exercises, eating moderately or aligned with your body size, and your metabolism rate. People should attempt to follow well-defined eating practices and request specialist advice when needed. 

To answer the question of what becomes more important between diet or exercising, I commenced with finding reasons to motivate physical activity. Thereafter, I attempt to explain what overeating means. The final section aims to guide balanced dieting while exercising. Let’s see what the first section presents. 

Why do we need to exercise? 

Over the years, people started to feel that exercising became a fashion trend and not conducive to all lifestyles. It started to become an activity for people who comprise the time to gym 24 hours long. The assumption developed that working individuals struggle to find the hours to allocate towards exercising and therefore lived without it.

Unfortunately, in time we realized that if we abstain from any exercise, our bodies struggle with diverse health-related issues. For example, besides that we become overweight, we struggle with obesity, diabetes, and general weight gain that influences the flexibility of our muscles. 

Also, our modern lifestyles began to influence our way of eating and weight gain started to impact our health. We eat a lot more at night and exercise less than our ancestors used to. The outcome of an unbalanced lifestyle scale allows the body to suffer from newly identified illnesses and sicknesses. For example, heart diseases and obesity.

Sometimes we ask why we need to exercise? Do we need to exercise at least 40 minutes a day to allow for some physical activity to occur? According to research, if we aim to stay healthy, some level of training becomes a requirement to look after your wellbeing. Your levels of exercising also need planning because if you invest in too much activity, you may gain weight as well. Mostly we feel dismayed when we attempt to lose those extra kilos even when we train (1). 

It becomes important to request advice from a trainer or specialist in the field. The person comprises the ability to develop an exercise plan aligned with your circumstances, goals, and aims. Researchers have shown that depending on individuals’ circumstances different reasons for taking part in exercises exist. People become motivated for different reasons, for example coping with stress, reaching their goals, exploring or just taking part in fun (2). 

Medical research indicated that people who aim to lose weight or maintain a healthy lifestyle should take part in physical activities. Some examples of exercising include running or walking that can prevent heart-related problems, suffering from a stroke- or stress-related issues. 

According to medical specialists, a person at least needs to undertake 150 minutes of moderate exercise. It became important to note that strenuous exercises may present negative impacts as well, and people need to manage their exercise programs appropriately (3).  

Health specialists indicated that people who exercise improve their levels of anxiety and depression during the process (4). The circumstances positively transform people who struggle with mood swings, irritability, and diverse psychological issues. Although these symptoms relate to psychological challenges, they align with weight-related issues. 

Diverse reasons exist why people should participate in active exercises. A list of health and psychological motivations support recommendations for daily exercise. Individuals can take part in many exercise types that align with different fitness levels and some examples relate to the following: 

  • Your body prevents you from encountering osteoporosis.
  • The regular activity allows for the development of a strong bone structure.
  • It prevents your system from struggling with high blood pressure or cardiovascular diseases.
  • Exercising assists individuals who struggle with arthritis to cope with daily physical requirements for example stair climbing.

Depending on your health status, health practitioners always recommend a discussion with a specialist first to assist with the development of an exercise plan. Why do we need to consult with our doctor before we exercise? 

Many times we feel desperate to lose weight and start with exercises that can impact negatively on our health status. Your doctor comprises the ability to identify key concerns and recommend exercises you can safely take part in. If you comprise a weak heart, struggle with low blood pressure and other health concerns, you may need a specialized training program. It also helps to participate in group training programs consist of people who can provide support. Motivation plays a key role in exercising one can receive from your doctor, trainer or friends. 

For example, one cannot take part in long-distance running if not properly trained. Similar to a gym environment, a person needs to present caution regarding the exercises you take part in.

Let us focus on the eating part first. What happens to our bodies when we overeat and consume foods while sitting in one place?

What happens when we eat too much? 

One key challenge modern people struggle with relates to the maintenance of their allowed calorie intake. Some food types comprise more calories than others. It becomes important to understand the number of calories your body can take without increasing weight. 

Many reasons exist, for example, we eat to feel better, increase our energy levels, or look for comfort food. During many times at work, we also enjoy our lunch meal at our desk to save on time (7). In some instances, we consume junk food at work and if we eat too much while sitting, the body stores the additional calories as fat. 

Overeating and preventing exercising can cause different negative effects that restrain your body from remaining healthy. Some negative effects align with the following symptoms (8): 

  • Your digestive system struggles. 
  • The digestive enzymes present a limited availability to deal with all those food intakes. If you eat too much, it becomes more difficult to process your meal without changing the contents into fat. 
  • To ensure weight loss, a well-defined diet becomes critical. How do we rescue this matter? We need to find a balance between exercising and eating. How do we reach a healthy and sustainable wellbeing status inclusive of both factors?

 How do we find a balance between exercising and dieting? 

To develop a balance between exercising and eating, one needs to follow some basic steps aligned with your daily lifestyle. A person must remember that the development of a healthy body includes an active diet and exercises aligned with bodily needs. Help from your doctor, dietician, and trainer can assist with the development of a balanced wellbeing program. 

Some individuals travel significantly as part of their work-life and others operate from their desks. Depending on your lifestyle, it becomes easy to find a balance between exercising and dieting if you stay motivated during the process. 

The simplistic steps one can follow include the following (10): 

  • Develop a work-out plan that suits your daily responsibilities, family and work life. Ensure to eat before you exercise that prevents your system from experiencing fatigue. 
  • Ensure to carry snacks with you when visiting the gym. Individuals sometimes struggle with fatigue or low blood pressure. It helps to keep additional healthy snacks or fruits with you if needed. Remember to consume lots of water when you train. 
  • Eat a good breakfast. Your first meal presents the most important activity of your day. Attempt to eat high fiber meals and abstain from consuming refined sugar products. 
  • Ensure that you include some vegetables and fruits in your daily meals. 
  • Include some protein in your daily meals to strengthen your muscles especially if you aim to take part in diverse training. 
  • If you attend to exercise work on your fuel levels and include the following in your daily meals:
    • Banana
    • Nuts
    • Oranges
    • Whole grain bread.

 What is a more important diet or exercise? 

Both concepts stay important and play different roles in advancing your health status. People need food to fuel your body at the start of your day. You also need bodily energy to take part in an exercise program. Individuals cannot exclude either to maintain their bodily strength and keep the sicknesses away. 

Diet or exercise can become a problem if individuals exaggerate either of the two. If you exercise too much without eating properly, you may faint. A person who focuses on dieting only and abstain from exercising may lose muscle strength that causes a weak body to develop.

In summary, one cannot diet without exercising. During many times, we rapidly lose weight but our muscles become frail or we lose strength in our bone structure. We struggle with fatigue and struggle to keep up the energy levels. To allow for a healthy lifestyle, one needs to follow a well-planned diet to ensure the intake of recommended calories. A person’s body requires these calories to develop the energy you need to complete a successful training session. Food plays a critical part in ensuring that your body receives the nutrients and minerals it needs to cope with daily life. 

Individuals who focus on just dieting or taking part in exercises prevent their bodies from reaching the goals they need to develop a healthy lifestyle. A successful diet program allows your system to balance your food intake and prevent the system from gaining weight. Besides, a good exercise program allows your body to become physically strong and stay in shape, especially during the older years. So, diet or exercise, what’s most important? In conclusion, both aspects I see as significantly important to maintain a balanced, healthy style. Your body needs food to keep the energy levels high, but you require exercises to maintain a strong body.
